Words from my heart
Super Bowl XLVIII is scheduled for February 2, 2014, and bets are on. For a fleeting moment, Seattle Seahawks were favored to win, but according to sports-betting expert Jimmy Vaccaro, “after a majority of gamblers wagered on the Broncos, the line adjusted to make Denver a 1-point favorite.”
I know nothing about betting. I barely understand the game of football, and I don’t “have a team.” But I love to root for the underdog (that means I root for the Raiders a lot—my family’s team). Since the Broncos were initially the underdog, I feel torn. Do I root for Washington or Colorado? Maybe I should decide based on which state I like best.
That’s what I did in 1983.
I was pregnant with Orlando when the Washington Redskins played the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII. I burrowed in a bedroom that day to read and journal about being a first-time mom. In the midst of writing, I pondered the outcome of the Super Bowl and wrote, “I hope the Redskins win—Washington is such a beautiful state.” That’s SO embarrassing to admit.
Well, the Redskins were victorious and their 27-17 win over the Dolphins placed Super Bowl rings on their fingers for the first time. Exciting stuff! But back to my question: which team should I root for this year? In honor of my 1983 sentiments about the state of Washington, it seems fitting that I place my bet on Seattle. After all, they are statistically the underdog, and have a cool Space Needle. Plus . . . I love the rain.
